Beginning a painting without any real result in mind is freeing myself from preconceptions of what it will turn out to be. The work I love the most, when complete, covers the worst mistakes. By the time I get to where it doesn’t matter what happens and the work couldn’t be worse, some magic takes over and just
leads me through the process. The process IS the magic. The work becomes an amalgam of good design visited on my experiences.

In general, my goal is to combine the artistic craftsmanship of classical painting with the limitless possibilities of imagination in contemporary art. I strive to make a well-made aesthetic work of art by maintaining quality and using any technique that’s available to me. If I have anything to convey at all in my work the very least I can do is to paint it well.

My work is dependent on design fundamentals: form, color, and composition. I believe the most complex emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms. My style explores the relationship between man-made structures and the natural world; the idea of recognizable shapes and structures living within irrational
thoughts and emotions.

Jim produces large canvases: these landscape oil paintings could be described as abstracts in that they do not depict a scene or place, and that the overall aesthetic content is more important than the physical thing that is depicted. They commonly allude to the photographic process: the way this media captures movement: to freeze an instant or to show the blurring of natures chaotic movement through time.

My paintings are on show in galleries and arts events throughout the UK,I also exhibit in my own studio on the first Saturday of every month.

My work is somewhere between abstract and completely non-objective. At times there seem to be recognizable images in my paintings, but these images lack definite boundaries and oscillate between possibilities.
