Trip to the Sea was painted on a day out to the sea. As is often the case no matter how warm it feels inland once you get to the sea the weather takes a turn for the worse. As you can probably tell from the painting it was a windy day but still warm with a great blue sky reflecting off the sea. This painting was for sale but has now been sold. I have a high quality scan of this painting so when I get a chance I will make it available as a print and put them up for sale.
This was one of the early sea painting
attempts and I am still happy with it several years on, perhaps it has a simplicity that some of my later works don't have. I enjoy painting the sea and coastline of Scotland as I think it is one of the most amazing places on earth, I realize Im biased but I think we all are when it comes to our local area.
When im painting I try not to create a perfect copy of the seascape and insead try to paint what I think are the most basic elements, once I have these in place I then let chance take control. The oil paints mix well on the canvas when wet and more often than not they create details which the viewer then translates in to something. In this way the painting is alwasy adding more and more detail the longer it is studied. Because the mind will always try and make sense of a shape and give it form and a name this painting has many levels which at first will not be apparent.
I often keep the best paintings I do back for long periods as I dont like to sell them straight away, I often hang them on my wall and get some enjoyment from them myself before I put them up for sale. This sea painting has been sold.

"Doubtless there are things in nature which have not yet been seen. If an artist discovers them, he opens the way for his successors. "
