Sunset Near Penicuik is a landscape painting which centers on the dramatic sunset and tree line along Sir John Clerke's Estate. Here the orange oil paint creates a dramatic skyline for this landscape painting. It is a rare event for me to be out so late that I'm able to capture the sunset but on this occasion I was lucky enough to have enough light left to carry on painting. The forground is not the most detailed oil work Ive ever produced but the main focus of the landscape was the sky.
Very little light was reaching the tree line I was in front of and so they almost appeared flat, as if cut out and very two dimensional. The important area of the painting for me was the sky, trying to capture it was tricky as I knew I only had a few moments to capture the sunset before it set over the hills and the landscape would become too dark to paint.
Even though the canvas is relativly small trying to paint such a dramtic landscape is never easy, especially when you know the clock is against you. When I got back to the studio I was very tempted to start adding more detail in to the forground but as the work dryed on the wall I became more and more happy with it the way it was. It was a sunset captured and in many ways changing it would make it less real to me.

"Never leave a painting mediocre; it's better to take a chance with it.”

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny.”
