Sunny Hill near Penicuik is an art work on canvas that is all about the sun catching the hills and the fields as the clouds cast shadows down on the earth. Trying to capture the light is a constant challenge. As I was painting this art work on canvas the sun was constantly breaking through the cloud cover and lighting up the hill in front of me, making the scene far more interesting than I had previously thought.
Its not often we get the sun breaking through as it did on this occasion and i produced several canvas art works. I normally spend at most two hours trying to capture the scene, any longer and I feel either the painting isn't working or I am over working the canvas. Art to me is all about the moment and due to the constantly changing weather those moments are often short lived.
Creating art in this way allows me to work quickly on the canvas and produce something which fits the moment, rather than returning to a studio with artificial light and trying to finish it off by memory. Often I will sit and go on till I feel its finished.
I very rarely finish paintings off in my studio, I only ever repair a painting if I have damaged it in some way on my way home.
I try my best to keep my art simple and spontaneous, in that way I ensure each canvas holds a particular moment in time, which ultimately makes it special art.

"
At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since."
Salvador Dali
"These rough sketches, which are born in an instant in the heat of inspiration, express the idea of their author in a few strokes, while on the other hand too much effort and diligence sometimes saps the vitality and powers of those who never know when to leave off. "
Giorgio Vasari |
