Scottish Landscape

Art Gallery of scottish oil paintings for sale by local edinburgh artist

Pentland Hills is a painting created in June. On the horizon you can make out the Pentland Hills, the view taken is west of Silverburn. I was trying to capture the sky moving overhead and the wetness of the ground. As the clouds kept parting rays of sunlight would make certain areas light up and this was a challenge as they kept on changing.

The landscape in this area is very green and lush, we very rarely have droughts so most of the oil paintings I produce have green areas. On occasion I change the natural green colour for more vibrant colours such as red and orange to try and give the feeling of the energy moving around the Scottish landscape. I don't sit down to paint a copy of what I see before me, I'd much rather try and capture what isn't seen if that makes sense.

This is a slightly larger oil painting that the 7"x 5" canvases I usually work on. The larger canvases present their own unique problems due to the time it takes to paint them and the amount of time I have before I need to take shelter from the inevitable rain.

"I am unable to make any distinction between the feeling I get from life and the way I translate that feeling into painting."
